Drama students from Grace Academy & Immanuel College with the workshop facilitators in Paris

Our first-ever Drama Student Convention in Paris was a resounding success, giving students a unique opportunity to enhance their understanding of drama and performance in an inspiring setting. With hands-on workshops, expert insights, and unforgettable experiences, this event was designed to help students bridge the gap between Key Stage 3 and GCSE-level drama while boosting both their practical skills and confidence. And with next year’s event already in the works, we can’t wait to do it all again!

“The students will never forget this trip” Izzy Dickinson, Grace Academy

Paris Drama Convention - Learning Objectives

The Drama Student Convention in Paris was built around the key elements of the GCSE Drama syllabus, including:

  • Set Text Study and Response to Live Theatre (for the written exam)
  • Performance from a Text (honing acting and interpretation skills)
  • Devising Theatre (developing creativity and teamwork)

Our aim was to provide students with deeper insight into these areas while reinforcing classroom learning in a fresh, exciting environment. By working collaboratively and engaging with experienced drama educators, students gained valuable skills and knowledge to help them reach their full potential.

Who went on the trip

Two school groups—Grace Academy from Coventry and Immanuel College from Bradford—travelled to Paris, many of the students experiencing an overseas trip for the first time. Excitement was high as they arrived, ready for a week packed with drama, discovery and a little Disney magic!

Day 1 - Inspirational day of drama workshops

Monday’s workshops set the tone for the trip. The day kicked off with an insightful presentation from Tracy Dorrington, the founder of Drama Matters, an essential online forum for drama educators, and Drama Subject Lead at the Herts & Essex High School & Science College

Tracy’s interactive session focused on the written exam, giving students practical strategies to analyse performances critically and use subject-specific language effectively.

Francesca Baxter, party leader from Immanuel College said “The written exam session was nice, the students were looking forward to that part the least, yet I believe they got even more out of that one than the others.”

After the talk, the two schools split into different workshops:

  • Grace Academy students tackled a devising theatre session, working in small groups to create original scenes based on a brand-new stimulus.
  • Immanuel College focused on scripted performances, honing their acting skills and bringing scenes to life.

Both groups demonstrated fantastic creativity and teamwork, culminating in peer performances where students provided insightful feedback, linking their observations back to key exam skills.

Izzy Dickinson, party leader from Grace Academy, commented that the hands-on workshops gave students new skills they could take away with them. She said “The devising workshop was really beneficial to students, they worked with people they wouldn’t usually work with which is really good for building confidence and communication skills.”

Lunch provided a well-earned break, with students sampling French cuisine at a local restaurant nestled in a horse-riding school—a cultural experience in itself!

Evening talent show

After a full day of learning and performing, you’d think the students would be ready to relax—but drama students are never offstage! The evening’s talent show featured an incredible mix of performances, from singing and dancing to comedy acts. It was a brilliant showcase of creativity, confidence, and camaraderie.

Day 2 - A touch of Disney Magic

Tuesday brought a well-earned reward: a day at Disneyland Paris! Students enjoyed the rides and attractions before gathering for a performance of The Lion King – Rhythm of the Pride Lands. With guaranteed premium seats, they had the best view in the house to consider the use of physicality, vocal skills, set design, costumes, and sound and lighting to communicate meaning to the audience—essential inspiration for their own studies.

Day 3 - Exploring Paris

On Wednesday, the groups split for a day of exploration:

  • Immanuel College took in the sights of Paris, enjoying a relaxing Seine River Cruise and iconic landmarks.
  • Grace Academy opted for another day at Walt Disney Studios Park, braving the Avengers Assemble rollercoaster and (for those who dared!) the Tower of Terror.

An unforgettable experience

As Thursday arrived, it was time to head home—tired but thrilled by an incredible week of drama, cultural encounters and new friendships. This convention wasn’t just about drama techniques; it was about confidence-building, teamwork, and experiencing the world outside the classroom.

Francesca Baxter said “Our students have gained skills and techniques for the classroom, but this trip is more than that, it’s about building trust between the students before going back to school, the relationships built whilst here will be massive when we go back to the classroom that will be a foundation for moving forward.”

Looking Ahead to 2026!

Inspired by this year’s success, we’re already planning exciting new elements for next year’s Drama Convention in January 2026. Expect more expert speakers, interactive workshops, and surprises along the way. We hope you’ll join us for another unforgettable drama experience in Paris!
